Zemeli

Zemeli - a 19th-century micro-district of Tbilisi (currently Rustaveli Square and its surrounding territory).

The name was given according to the pharmacy located here, which was opened in 1890 at the corner of Olga (currently M. Kostava) Street and Veris Daghmarti (Vera Descent). The pharmacy was founded by Evgeni Zemel, a pharmacist-provisor of German descent and a graduate of the Pharmaceutical Department of Saint Petersburg University (the pharmacist himself resided in the same building).

In the 1930s, the pharmacy was demolished in connection with the expansion of the square. Later, another pharmacy stood on the same site, which by tradition was still referred to as the "Zemeli Pharmacy." In 1983, due to the reconstruction of Rustaveli Square, this pharmacy was also removed. The local population continues to refer to the micro-district by this name to this day.
