Vazeh

Vazeh (real name – Mirza Shafi) (b. c. 1792–1796, Ganja – d. November 28, 1852, Tbilisi) was an Azerbaijani poet, teacher, calligrapher. From 1840, he started teaching Azerbaijani and Persian languages in Tbilisi. In 1844, he founded a literary and philosophical circle. In 1846–1850, he continued to work as a teacher in Ganja. In 1850, he returned to Tbilisi. Vazeh's work includes philosophical lyrics, works of the satirical genre, love poems, and etc. The originals of Vazeh's poems, with a few exceptions, have not been preserved. The world knows him through the translations of the German poet F. Bodenstedt (A Thousand and One Days in the East, 1850, and Songs of Mirza Shafi, 1851). Vazeh was well acquainted with the Georgian reality, which was also reflected in his poetry (Farewell to Tbilisi).
