The Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary of Vazisubani

The Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary of Vazisubani stands in the center of the village. It dates back to the second half of the 6th century. The church is a large three-nave basilica. It is built with large cobblestones of equal size. The building is divided into narrow, high naves by two pairs of pillars. The central nave ends with an apse of the altar in the east. The roofs of the side naves are horseshoe-shaped. In the eastern part, each of them have rectangular storerooms. The arches separating the naves are also horseshoe-shaped. There are three entrances – from the south, north and west. Directly from the entrance to the basilica, in the surrounding area, there are three-arched entrances on the north and south sides, and one-arched entrance on the west side. The surrounding area is covered with a vault, which rests on arches built on pillars built into the walls of the basilica. The facades of the church are simple, only the upper part of the walls of the main nave is adorned with decorative arches. The basilica was renovated in the 19th century and covered with roof tiles. In 2011, with the funding of the international charity foundation “Cartu”, renovation of the church was conducted.
