Inauri Aleksi

A. Inauri 

Inauri Aleksi, [April 29 (May 12), 1908, Gori – June 28, 1993, Tbilisi], Soviet Colonel General (1967), Hero of the Soviet Union (1985).

In 1931, he graduated from the North Caucasian Cavalry School for Red Commanders, and in 1948, from the Academy of the General Staff. He was a participant in the WW II. From 1942 to 1943, he was the commander of the 34th Division operating on the Southwestern and Southern Fronts; subsequently, he commanded the 1st Cavalry Division. During the war, he participated in a number of defensive and offensive operations.

In 1944, he received the rank of Major General, and in 1953, the rank of Lieutenant General. From 1949 to 1953, he was the commander of a mechanized division of the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany; from 1953, he was a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Georgia and its Bureau; from 1953 to 1954, he served as the Minister of Internal Affairs of the Georgian SSR; and from 1954 to 1988, he was the Chairman of the State Security Committee of the Georgian SSR.

He was awarded the state and military orders and medals.
