Ivashchenko Mikhail

Ivashchenko Mikhail, (1881, St. Petersburg, – 22. VIII. 1946, Tbilisi), Russian archaeologist. In 1916, he participated in the historical-archaeological research conducted in Trebizond under the direction of T. Uspensky. In 1924–31, he worked in Sukhumi. He was a member of the Abkhazian Scientific Society, and subsequently its secretary; he directed archaeological excavations (the Eshera burial ground, seaside dolmens, the Ochamchire settlement); he investigated the monuments of Colchian culture. Ivashchenko put forward  the proposition concerning the dependence of the kobanuri [Koban] culture upon the Colchian culture. His contribution in the study of the rich archaeological heritage of Trialeti (1936–37) and Mtskheta (1938–41) is great. He additionally elaborated upon numismatic, ethnographic, and military-historical issues.
