Tkhorzhevski Ivane

I. Tkhorzhevski

Tkhorzhevski, Ivane [1843, Sevastopol – April 3 (16), 1910, Tbilisi], Russian poet and translator. Together with his wife, Aleksandra [December 30, 1855 (January 11, 1856), Odesa – February 1933, Leningrad], he frequently published poems under the joint pseudonym "Ivan-da-Maria."

At the end of the 1870s, the couple arrived in Tbilisi and became involved in the local literary and public life. Their works were published in the humorous journal Phalanga (Phalanx), which was issued in Tbilisi in the Russian language during 1880–1881. Immediately upon the banning of this journal, starting in December 1881, Tkhorzhevski, with the assistance of local progressive groups, published the artistic-humorous journal Gusli (1881–1882). This journal featured his own works, as well as those of D. Eristavi, D. Minaev, A. Pleshcheyev, A. Palm, and others. Tkhorzhevski received significant assistance from the renowned Georgian publicist N. Nikoladze and other Georgian public figures.

In 1901, the journal Argonavti (Argonaut) was published under Tkhorzhevski's initiative. Georgian themes occupied a certain place in his creative work. In 1897, the collection Samples of Georgian Poetry was published in Tbilisi. This publication featured works by G. Orbeliani, N. Baratashvili, A. Chavchavadze, A. Tsereteli, I. Chavchavadze, R. Eristavi, and others, translated by Tkhorzhevski. This was one of the very first collections of works by Georgian writers translated into the Russian language.
