G. Toidze

Toidze, Grigol (Givi) (18. XII. 1932, Tbilisi – 10. II. 2022, Tbilisi), painter and graphic artist. People's Artist of Georgia (1988), winner of the Shota Rustaveli State Prize (1981), and Honorary Citizen of Tbilisi (1999).

He graduated from Tbilisi State Academy of Arts in 1960 (under the supervision of K. Sanadze). He was a teacher at the same institution, becoming a professor in 1995. Toidze's creative work is characterized by its high quality, variety of themes, and high professionalism. He passionately created landscapes of Old Tbilisi.

His principal works include: Autumn (1966) and Morning of a New Life (1967, both in private collections); Winter (1969, State Museum of Oriental Art, Moscow); Beloved Street (1974); They Stood and Waited, Grace of the Georgian Land, and Enguri Hydroelectric Station (all three from 1975 and in private collections); Holiday in Khevsureti (1978, panel, Rustaveli State Prize, Writers' Creative House, Bichvinta); In My Memory (1987); Dream (1995); Old Tbilisi (1996, private collection), among others.

He started the participation in art exhibitions in 1959, including the ones held in foreign countries such as Russia, Italy, Greece, Japan, and England. He held a personal exhibition in Nicosia, Cyprus, in 1987. The artist's works are preserved in museums and private collections across various cities in Georgia, Russia, Italy, and Germany.
