Zedgenidze Giorgi

Zedgenidze, Giorgi (February 21 [March 6], 1902, Tbilisi – August 24, 1994, Moscow), radiologist. He was one of the founders of radiology in the USSR. He held the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences (1937), the rank of Professor (1939), and was a full member of USSR Academy of Medical Sciences (1960).

In 1927, he graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Tbilisi State University. He spent nearly his entire professional life working in Russia. From 1939–41, he was the head of the Department of Radiology at the Naval Medical Academy, and from 1941–59, he held the same position at the Leningrad Military Medical Academy. Between 1958 and 1973, he was the founder and first director of the Scientific Research Institute of Medical Radiology of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences. From 1973, he served as a consultant at the Moscow Center for Clinical and Experimental Oncology, and starting in 1958, he was the editor of the journal Meditsinskaya Radiologiya (Medical Radiology).

Zedgenidze developed critical research on the biological effects of ionizing radiation, radiation therapy, and the radiology of malignant tumors, bone and joint conditions, gastrointestinal and lung diseases, as well as traumatic and other injuries. He also worked on the methodology of radiological examination.

From 1958, he was the chairman of the All-Union Society of Radiologists (becoming honorary chairman in 1979). He was a member of the radiology societies of France, Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Bulgaria, as well as a member of the executive committee of the World Association of Radiologists. He established a prominent school of radiobiologists in the USSR. He was the winner of numerous state awards.
