Queen Darejan's Palace

Queen Darejan's Palace

Queen Darejan's Palace, Sachino, is a monument of Georgian architecture in Tbilisi. It is the palace of Queen Darejan, the wife of King Erekle II.

The palace was built in 1776 and partially rebuilt in the 19th century. The historic landmark is located in an old district — Isani. It is built on the pier of the city fence at the top of the Wine Rise (Sirajkhana). The lower part of the tower is built of crushed stone. The structure is made of square bricks laid in layers.

The upper part of the tower is surrounded by a wooden balcony. The palace church was also built during the same period. After the queen moved to St. Petersburg, it was first transformed into the  Transfiguration Monastery, and then (1862) became a seminary for the children of clergy.

Over time, the building got damaged, and then was rebuilt, and new annexes appeared. In 1978–1980, reconstruction work was carried out in the historical district. As a result, the monument was cleared of the annexes that were built later on and its original appearance was restored.

In 1987–1988, one-actor theatre operated at the Queen Darejan's Palace.

Currently, there is the Transfiguration Monastery there.
