Revaz Gachechiladze (b. May 4, 1943, Tbilisi) is an orientalist-historian and geographer, diplomat, Doctor of Geographical Sciences (1990), professor (1996), full member of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences (2018), president of the Geographical Society of Georgia (2008-2016). He has received the State Award of Georgia (2002) in the field of science and technology, Vakhushti Bagrationi Prize (2010); He is an Honorary Foreign Member of the Royal Geographical Society (London) (1999).
He is the editor-in-chief of the international Georgian Geographical Journal (since 2020), one of the founders of the scientific disciplines of social geography and political geography in Georgia, the author of monographs and numerous scientific publications.
In 1965, he graduated from the Faculty of Oriental Studies of Tbilisi State University (TSU), and in 1968, he completed postgraduate studies at the Department of Political and Economic Geography of Foreign Countries of the same university. In 1973-1974, he completed a scientific internship at King's College, University of London.
He started working at the Department of Social Geography of TSU in 1968 (head of the department in 1993-1998). In 1987-1990, he was the Director of the Sociological Research Center of the Georgian Academy of Sciences, in 1990-1998 – Deputy Director of the Institute of Demography and Sociological Research, a visiting professor at Oxford University (England, 1994-2011), Mount Holyoke College (USA, 1996), and a NATO researcher (1995-1997).
In parallel with his scientific work, he held various political and diplomatic positions in 1980-1987. He was Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Georgia to the State of Israel (1998-2004), the Republic of Armenia (2005-2009), the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (2014-2016), and the Slovak Republic (2016-2020).
He was awarded the Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani Medal (2021).
