G. Kalatozishvili

Giorgi (Tito) Kalatozishvili (b. September 26, 1929, Tbilisi – d. July 22, 1984, Tbilisi), cinematographer, film director, People's Artist of Georgia (1980). He graduated from the Cinematography Department of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (B. Volchek's workshop, 1954). Kalatozishvili's first cinematographic work is the film The Bride (with V. Korotkov. Directed by G. Nikulin, V. Shredel, 1957, Russia). From 1958, he worked as a production cameraman at the Georgian Film Studio. He directed the films: Last Summer (1959), The Story of One Daughter (1960), Chiakokonoba (1961), Me, Grandma, Iliko and Ilarion (1962), White Caravan (with L. Kalashnikov, 1963), I See the Sun (1965), Matsi Khvitia (with I. Amasiyski, 1966), Londre (1966). Kalatozishvili's directorial debut was the television novella Arghani (1967). He was the production director of the films: The Death of a Philatelist (1969), I, Investigator (1971), Cafe Isotope (1977, “Mosfilm”); Siberian Grandfather (1973), Kikvidze (together with G. Gabeskiria, 1980). He made the television films The Prisoner of the Caucasus (1976 – Prize of the International Federation of Cinematographers, Monte Carlo Television Festival, 1978) and The Caucasian Story based on the works of L. Tolstoy. He dedicated the film Thank you, Ratil (1983) to the popularizer of Georgian musical folklore, Czech musician and singer, Josef Navratil. He worked on the film Les Fourberies de Scapin (based on the play by Molière), which was completed by his son – M. Kalatozishvili. He received state awards.
